The Maya called this part of the world Sian Ka'an, or "where the sky is born." And after an early winter sunset, the immense starry sky quickly leads one to understand the origin of this name.
After our snowed-in limbo stop in New York, Sian Ka'an welcomed us with sunny skies and the perpetually gentle breeze (that even kept the mosquitoes away!). Our house, Elefante Volador, was located about 4o minute drive from Tulum. We've spent long, lazy days watching the waves, birds and land crabs. Our stretch of the beach was pretty much left untouched by visitors, so we had a full bounty of beautiful conch shells and washed out sea coral to choose from. Rio and Ila quickly turned them into toys. The tiny land, shell carrying, crabs were also eventually transformed into playthings (after the initial fear was overcome). The crab family/ school was probably very grateful after we left, as they were heavily guarded by Ila's chubby hands.
The house came equipped with two watch dogs. Our cartetakers, a Maya family, also had a puppy, who received a lot of attention from Ila and Rio. Ila added a new word to her ever growing vocabulary - "puppy". The other word was "chips", but we already know where Ila's head is most of the time. Rio on the other hand forgot to eat the entire week, she was so busy running around her "Mexico beach".

Mexico Preview
Our trip to Mexico was filled with sunshine, good food and nice sandy beaches.
Here's a little preview of the upcoming trip report. This video was taken in Merida. Rio was celebrating the purchase of a little red fan and a new Mexican dress.
